Preston North End got promoted last season from League One via the play-offs and, in their first season back in the Sky Bet Championship, there were no real expectations hanging over their shoulders.

However, the Lilywhites have had a fantastic first season back in the Championship, currently sitting tenth in the table.

Simon Grayson's side have also been within reach of the play-offs for a large portion of the season, but it now looks out of their capabilities, sat 11 points behind sixth-placed Derby County.

The season has not all been filled with positives however, with some bumps and scratches along the way.

Jordan Pickford's recall

In the summer of 2015, Preston recruited goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Sunderland on a season-long-loan.

Pickford featured in 27 matches in all competitions for North End, and hugely impressed during his spell at Deepdale.

He was considered by many North End fans as the player of the season up to the start of 2016 but, after the appointment of Sam Allardyce at Sunderland, he was recalled by the Black Cats.

Preston were left gutted after the recall of the highly-rated England Under-21 international, especially after seeing that he has only played two games for Sunderland since his recall.

On Boxing Day of 2015, Preston North End made the journey to the John Smith's Stadium, looking to defeat the Terriers who had won just two of their last ten games.

The Lilywhites put in one of their worst performances of the season in front of more than 2,000 travelling fans, who went home somewhat embarrassed by their team's performance.

The Terriers ran the game and were 3-0 up after 75 minutes, thanks to two goals from Nahki Wells.

The goal that North End did eventually get in the 94th minute was nothing short of a consolation goal to their woeful performance.

Jermaine Beckford's injury

The former Leeds United man played a huge part in Preston's promotion winning season of 2014-15 after contributing 18 goals, including his hat-trick at Wembley in their 4-0 win over Swindon Town.

In the summer, Beckford joined the Lilywhites on a permanent deal after being on loan from Bolton Wanderers the season before.

However, after just two appearances for the Whites, he was forced to have surgery on his knee in September, which left him out injured until just a few weeks ago.

With Beckford out injured, along with Stevie May, it has left North End a little short up top at times, with just three fit strikers to pick from.
