Burnley have had a fantastic first season back in the Sky Bet Championship after their relegation from the Premier League last season.

They currently occupy first position, and Sean Dyche's men find themselves unbeaten in 2016.

The Clarets have been solid all season long and look favourites to return to England's top division, but they have suffered some setbacks along the way.

After their relegation from the Premier League, Burnley did very well to hold on to most of squad that almost kept themselves up in the top division.

After the disappointment of falling back down a league, it was important that the Clarets started the season in the right way and to take as many points as possible.

However, in their first three games of the season, they took just two points, drawing their first two matches against Leeds United and Birmingham City, and then losing away to Ipswich Town.

In early December, Preston North End made the short journey to Turf Moor to watch their side face a Burnley side sat in fifth position.

The match saw the away side beat the promotion hopefuls 2-0 in a match where Burnley never really got going.

The loss to close local rivals will certainly have lowered morale in the camp, especially after not winning any of their three previous matches.

The result handed bragging rights to North End, and Burnley will be hoping to get revenge when the sides meet again at Deepdale at the end of April.

The ability to beat promotion rivals is important for any team trying to gain promotion from any division.

For the most part, Burnley have done well against teams near the top but, when Burnley visited third placed Hull, it all went wrong.

Burnley were at the time eight points off the automatic promotion places, which is a rather sizeable gap for just their 24th game of the season, so it seemed important that the Clarets left with at least a point.

But Hull completely blew them away in a 3-0 victory, in which Burnley were limited to just two shots on target all game.
