It was a heartbreaking end to what could have been a heavily memorable campaign for Leeds United, as they failed to progress past the play-off semi final this week.

Frank Lampard’s Derby County received all the praise after the game, after being the better side on the night at Elland Road, with Leeds unable to cope with them at times.

Camera pans at the ground showed fans and players in a dejected manner, with many fans looking shocked and speechless, probably asking themselves ‘where do we go from here?’

Well, we’ve thought long and hard about where Leeds go from here and how they can go one step further next season.

Here, we list three things they should do to ensure promotion next time round.

Give Bielsa a new contract

Whatever happens, Marcelo Bielsa should be Leeds’ first priority.

He may not be perfect, but he has a blueprint that nearly brought Leeds to promotion.

With a few more additions, he can do that next season.

Sign a new winger

With Daniel James links fading due to Premier League interest, it looks like he won’t be the man, but Leeds need to sign a new winger.

Injuries haven’t helped, and while some of the youngsters have stepped up, Leeds just haven’t been as good as they can be at times this season.

A new winger would give the Whites a better chance of promotion.

Improve in big games

Derby County, Sheffield United, Norwich City - three games that spring to mind without longer than a second of thought, where Leeds should have done better.

The loss against the Blades brought them back into the promotion race, while other big losses against teams around them highlights Leeds’ character issues.

They will need to put this right next season if they are to go up.
