As Sheffield United currently remain in League One, it is rare a week goes by without fans discussion turning to just what has gone wrong at Bramall Lane over the past few seasons.

Blades fans are often quick to put the blame on co-owner Kevin McCabe, who despite considerable backing, seems to take the majority of the flack from supporters.

There is more to it though than just mistakes at board level and with McCabe, and this filters right down through the management, the first team, and even to matchday basics such as catering and facilities at times!

Under Chris Wilder, Sheffield United are trying to regain their identity, and fans are quietly optimistic that after two wins on the bounce in League One, things might be picking up.

It is a subject to explore though, and here, FLW writer Lee Connor identifies THREE of the key mistakes Sheffield United have made over the past 5 years...

Sacking Danny Wilson

Danny Wilson

In hindsight, although at the time it seemed the right thing to do, sacking manager Danny Wilson going into a playoff campaign was a bad move by the club.

Wilson had led the Blades to within inches of promotion the season before, only for the club to implode going into the final games of the season amid the controversy surrounding their star striker Ched Evans.

The former Owls manager still had United on course for a playoff place, however, it was deemed unacceptable at the time, and he was relieved of his duties with Chris Morgan taking over in the interim.

United were ultimately knocked out of the playoffs by Yeovil Town, and they have never quite recovered. Star names left in the summer following, and David Weir, Nigel Clough, and Nigel Adkins have all since failed to improve on Wilson's efforts.

The handling of the Ched Evans saga

A touchy subject due to the nature of what allegedly happened, but it was the resulting aftermath following the striker's release from prison which caused the most uproar in Sheffield.

The Blades were all set to allow Evans - their star man under Danny Wilson when they were pipped to promotion by Sheffield Wednesday - to begin training with the club.

This caused a huge scandal among local and national press, and social media seemingly went into meltdown following the news the Blades were considering re-signing the player.

Celebrities and so called 'patrons' of the club all had their say, and the negative press around the club at the time made the Blades an easy target for rival supporters.

The Blades soon backed down in their stance, which begs the question just why they considered the offer in the first place without carrying out such due diligence to gauge how it would be received?

People to this day still talk about Ched Evans, while some still call for him to be re-signed despite him now being at Chesterfield.

For me, it is a burden the club no longer needs to have hanging over it. United are going in a different direction under Chris Wilder now, and the sooner Evans leaves the thoughts of Blades fans, the better in my eyes.

Overpaying and excessive wages

In the last few seasons inparticular, few Blades fans can argue that there has been massive turnover of players, and more so, a turnover of players on inflated wages not matching their abilities.

Under Nigel Clough especially, the board backed the former Derby manager to the hilt, with Clough overseeing over 40 transfers into Bramall Lane. Many of these players came in on big money, and have not offered enough value for that money.

Players like John Brayford, Michael Higdon, Paul Coutts, Dean Hammond, and Conor Sammon - to name but a few - have all failed to do much at Bramall Lane while being on big money for League One.

Chris Wilder is now paying the price for that, having to move players out and cash in on his best assets, while trying to bring players in on a shoestring budget.

Sheffield United fans, what do you think? Is there more mistakes? I'm sure there is! Let us know your comments and thoughts!
