Every single club makes mistakes in this day and age, especially when you've been the longest-serving side in the Championship - with Ipswich Town having suffered 15 consecutive seasons in the second-tier.

The Tractor Boys have been challenging for a return to the top-flight since their relegation in 2002 but have struggled, although they do seem to be on the way up again given the form of the past few seasons.

However, the Suffolk-based club have made plenty of mistakes in the last five years.

Here, FLW writer Ryan White looks at THREE key mistakes Ipswich Town have made in the past five years...

Selling Daryl Murphy

You can't fault Ipswich Town for purchasing Daryl Murphy in the summer of 2013 from Celtic, after a successful loan-spell the previous year.

The Irishman formed a strong striker partnership with David McGoldrick, where the two scored 29 goals between them and Murphy getting thirteen of them.

The 33-year-old has been the source of most of Ipswich Town's goals in recent seasons and the decision from the board to sell Daryl Murphy will be a key mistake that they will probably regret, if they don't already.

He joined Newcastle United in the summer transfer window for a fee of around £4m.

Lack of ambition

The fact that the club has been in the Sky Bet Championship for 15 years, sort of proves their lack of ambition, in the last five years anyway.

Mick McCarthy's side has finished in the top-ten for the last three consecutive season, which to some may be a positive but I am sure a lot of supporters are quite frustrated.

Ipswich Town have not signed anyone spectacular in recent years, and that's what you need to get to the Premier League - someone who can bag 20-30 goals a season.

They will be looking to improve on their 7th position of the 2015/16 campaign by finishing in the Play-Offs, but will be again reliant on their lacklustre squad and a couple of loanees from the top-flight.

Appointing Paul Jewell

Ipswich Town sacked Roy Keane in January 2011 after a run of several poor results and never building up a challenge for promotion, and appointed former Wigan Athletic and Derby County manager Paul Jewell.

Marcus Evans, the owner of the Tractor Boys, wanted someone in who could turn the ship around instantly and perhaps make a very late push into the top-six.

However, Paul Jewell was not the man. He even admitted that he was not the person for the job, as Jewell wanted a long-term plan at Portman Road and build something for the future but the board wanted a plan for the present.

The 51-year-old left his role by mutual consent in October 2012 with the side bottom of the Championship.
