Nottingham Forest go into tonight’s game against Rotherham United knowing that a win will put them into fifth in the Sky Bet Championship and extend their mini unbeaten run.

The Reds have not had a great time of things over the past five years or so but under French manager Philippe Montanier there is a real sense that the good times can return to the City Ground.

Forest will travel to the New York Stadium backed by a sold out away end, with fans coming out in massive numbers, despite their displeasure with how the owner of the club is running things.

The East Midlands-based club have had some good days over the past five years although they have been few and far between, with several boardroom embarrassments and high-profile player departures masking the joyous times.

Football League World takes a look at the three best things Nottingham Forest have done in the last five years.

Utilise a string of young players

Nottingham Forest have a proud history of producing some quality players and that shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

In the current first-team squad the likes of Matty Cash, Ben Osborn and Jorge Grant have all risen through the ranks at the City Ground and the Reds supporters are sticklers for an academy prospect.

The Reds recouped a staggering £13 million for Oliver Burke last month and given the rate of some of the other prospects coming through, there is nothing to say that another talent won’t make a big money move in the future.

Signing Britt Assombalonga

Every team that does well in the Championship usually has a top quality goalscorer and Forest are the envy of most of the league by possessing a player such as Assombalonga.

The ex-Peterborough United striker signed for the club for £5.5 million and although he has missed over a year with injury, his goal ratio is still pretty impressive.

In his first season for the Reds in 2014/15 he netted 15 goals despite picking up a serious knee injury in February, to curtail a seemingly certain 20-goal haul.

This season the 23-year-old has been unfortunate to pick up a hamstring injury but he has still netted three goals despite playing just 123 minutes of Championship football.

Hire Pedro Pereira as Director of Football

The Portuguese man was in Italy with Fiorentina just last season, making the capture a massive coup for a Sky Bet Championship club.

Along with manager Philippe Montanier, Pereira has helped assemble a squad of players who haven’t cost a fortune and perhaps more importantly look as though they want to play for the shirt at Nottingham Forest.

A bit of football expertise around the boardroom has been needed for a long time at Nottingham Forest and Pereira is certainly offering that at present.

Signing the likes of Pajtim Kasami, Vladimir Stojkovic and Nicklas Bendtner wouldn’t have been possible without his input and for that the Reds faithful must be appreciative.
