Although it is the basement of the Football League, Sky Bet League Two is home to some sleeping giants and some fantastic fan-bases.

To put this into perspective, over 57,000 people were at Wembley on May 30th to watch the play-off final between AFC Wimbledon and Plymouth Argyle.

Also, over 30,000 fans came out over two legs to watch the play-off semi final tie between Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth in May. League Two fans certainly don't always get the credit that they rightfully warrant - travelling extremely long distances to watch not so pleasant football.

You will find some of the most committed fans in football floundering in the fourth tier of the English game.

It is in no way desirable to travel in excess of five hours each way to watch a game on a boggy pitch with distinctly average footballers, however these fans do it for the love of the game, and really epitomise what is great about the Football League.

Even though all fan-bases are brilliant, in this article Football League World's Jack Sharp looks at THREE of the best fan-bases in Sky Bet League Two...

Plymouth Argyle

plymouth

Plymouth Argyle are about to embark on their sixth season in the fourth tier of English football, a stat that can only be equalled by northern side Morecambe.

When the Pilgrim's were relegated from League One in the 2010-11 season the club were in deep financial trouble and during the first season in League Two, it looked as if the club could cease to exist. However, they were eventually financially rescued in October 2011, however still endured turmoil on the pitch.

With all of these problems however, the Green Army have been superb throughout, averaging over 1000 away fans at Sky Bet League Two games last season and taking nearly 35,000 fans to Wembley for the play-off final show the sheer size of the Green Army, and how surreal it was that a club that big could cease to exist, and not be in the Football League.

Portsmouth

portsmouth

Not so long ago Fratton Park was playing host to players like Ronaldinho and was hosting Premier League Football. Fast forward just under a decade and they are an established League Two team, playing in the fourth tier of English football since relegation from League One in the 2012-13 season.

Although the club isn't revelling in much success in current times, the Blue Army still come out in numbers everywhere. An average home attendance more than double any team in the division shows how massive the club is and the potential it truly has. The club is improving with Paul Cook at the helm, making some shrewd signings in the transfer window and the club came so close to promotion last term, getting beat agonisingly by Plymouth Argyle in the semi-finals of the playoffs.

All at Pompey will be hoping that the good days really start coming back to the club, and after all of the recent financial and on pitch turmoil at the club, they will be hoping for better days on the horizon and hope they can start rivalling their biggest enemies Southampton again.

Grimsby Town

Tranmere Rovers v Cambridge United - Sky Bet Football League Two

Grimsby are a football team with a formidable history and reputation. In previous years they have been found lounging around in non-league football, before securing their ticket back to the Football League with a victory in the Vanarama Conference final against Forest Green Rovers. The Mariner's lost their Football League status back in 2010, and it would take until 2016 for them to regain that status; six whole years in non-league - truly astounding when you consider the pedigree that the club has.

An outstanding fan base which has spurred the club through the recent turmoil in Non-League and financial crisis before that - it is an assurance that the committed fans that stuck with a Town through the time in the conference won't be going away now, and maybe now some of their mates may join them.

It will be an incredibly interesting season for the Mariner's, whatever happens on the pitch, the players who put on the Grimsby shirt will know they always have the advantage of a twelfth man in the stands.
