The last half a decade has been rather disappointing for Coventry City fans, having witnessed relegation from the Championship in 2012, and stagnation in League 1 ever since, even threatening to drop once again.

Despite this the Sky Blues have constructed some entertaining sides during this period, and have brought in players that have really excited the Ricoh Arena crowd.

Tony Mowbray faces a tough task of getting the Sky Blues out of Sky Bet League One, with a number of top clubs vying to get out of the third tier of English football.

Mowbray will be hopeful his new batch of players will turn out to be as successful as some who have gone before them, but meanwhile, FLW’s Tom Percival looks at THREE players who were a real success whilst at Coventry City during the past 5 years.....

John Fleck

Although he moved to divisional rivals Sheffield United in the summer on a free transfer, Fleck was a valuable servant to the club, amassing more appearances than anyone else during the club’s stint in League 1.

He joined from Rangers in the summer of 2012, and went on to make 162 appearances scoring 8 goals.

Many fans were disappointed to see the Scot depart in the summer, and his player of the season award last campaign is recognition to how important he was for the Sky Blues.

Adam Armstrong

He may only have been at the Ricoh Arena in a temporary capacity from Newcastle United, but Armstrong became a real fans favourite during his sole season in League 1 last year.

His 20 league goals was a significant milestone for the player himself, but also illustrated how important his contribution was to the club’s season, as the Sky Blues fell just short of the play-off places.

There was disappointment amongst the supporters that they could entice the striker back for a second spell this campaign, but his opportunity at Championship level with Barnsley is richly deserved, and most Coventry fans would like to see him do well.

Joe Murphy

The goalkeeper arrived at the club at the beginning of what turned out to be their last season at Championship level, and despite a slow start, turned out to be an important member of the side for a number of years.

Murphy made 137 appearances for the Sky Blues before departing for Huddersfield Town in 2014, and established himself as one of the best goalkeepers at League 1 level.

He has found first-team football hard to come by ever since, and many Coventry fans must wish he had stayed put at the Ricoh Arena.
