Filling the boots of a homegrown hero, a club’s leading scorer and talisman, is never going to be an easy task.

Karlan Grant had thoroughly impressed during the first six months of the season, but a move to the Premier League with Huddersfield was simply too good to turn down.

His goals couldn’t keep his new side in the top flight, but the ones he bagged for Charlton went some way to putting them in the top six.

All the Addicks needed after that was a viable partner for Lyle Taylor. They are one of the few teams to play a strike duo, a partnership that feeds off each other. With Grant gone, the responsibility fell to Igor Vetokele.

At first, the 27-year-old struggled. A week before the Easter weekend, he’d bagged just once. Lyle Taylor’s goals have still ensured they’re going to be in the top six at least, but the Angola-born striker hadn’t delivered.

Then Charlton sprung a real surprise, beating league leaders Luton 3-1. With the game tied at 1-1, Vetokele pounced and minutes later, Taylor rounded the win off.

He missed the defeat at Oxford, but was on target again during the 4-0 rout of Scunthorpe United.

After playing second fiddle to a wonderful pairing, Vetokele has had to step up and show what he’s made of. He’s taken time to adjust, but as the games have worn on his recent spell has looked inevitable.

He’s made the right runs, created chances and just hasn’t been clinical. Football managers don’t mind a certain wastefulness if a player is getting into the right areas.

With just a couple of matches left of the normal season and an inevitable play-off semi-final too, Igor Vetokele will surely be thinking he’s hitting form at the right time.

Confidence breeds success and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he added more to his tally to help the Addicks to a surprise Championship place next season.
