Plymouth striker Freddie Ladapo has surely risked his future by responding to the recent injury news released by Derek Adams.

Ladapo, who has 18 goals for the Pilgrims this season, was absent as they surrendered to Barnsley on Easter Monday. It was the second heavy defeat over the weekend, having lost to Gillingham in a relegation six-pointer on Good Friday.

Adams claimed Ladapo ‘ruled himself out’ of the fixture against Barnsley, but the striker responded immediately. He appeared to claim he had done no such thing, later adding that he was committed to playing for the fans, his fellow players and the club.

No mentioned of Derek Adams though.

The rumblings of discontent at Plymouth have been going on for a while, key figures Graham Carey and Ruben Lameiras haven’t signed new deals yet, but Ladapo is the first to seemingly break rank and let his feelings be known.

He’s taken a huge risk. If Adams stays put in the summer, the striker has a lot of making up to do. It seems the 26-year-old is not essential to the fight, despite his goals haul. If he wasn’t injured, why would Adams leave him out?

Some fans reacted by suggesting he has given up, like many of the players. If there is a dressing room split, then Ladapo has drawn the battle lines. If Adams stays, it’s going to be exceedingly difficult for the former Palace striker to do the same.

If the fiery Scot does leave the club in the summer, which relegation will almost certainly prompt, then Ladapo will be able to resume his career in the green and black, albeit possibly in League Two.

He should tear that division apart, especially given his performances this season, but has this latest spat undermined his standing with the fans too? Perhaps a dignified silence would have been more appropriate, towing the company line so to speak, until Adams has gone and they can all breathe a sigh of relief.

Whatever happens, Freddie Ladapo will surely be sweating on his future, but with the tweets not deleted, there’s clearly little remorse in his current stance.
