If we're being completely honest, it looks as though West Brom are heading back into the Championship.

With games running out and results not coming, the coverage of the Baggies is set to increase on this site as they become another member of the Football League.

When they do, they'll need to learn from the mistakes made by the likes of Sunderland.

Salvation doesn't lay in hanging on to over-paid stars, a root and branch assessment of the playing squad is needed with some brutal decisions to be made.

Aston Villa went about things the correct way, spending wisely but building cautiously also. Their cause was aided by the signing of Jonathan Kodjia, a proven striker at this level who brought them goals, stability and ultimately the basis for a promotion charge.

The Baggies will need to do the same, identify a striker who will score twenty a season, bid more for him than anyone else and reap the rewards. At FLW, we think the perfect player to help them get back into the top flight would be Jack Marriott.

I seem to be writing about Marriott increasingly as the days go on. He's had a great season at Peterborough, scoring 26 league goals in his 41 outings. He's a bullish centre forward, quick to react and always looking to get a shot off. He's not a natural finisher, a 23% conversation rates attests to that, but he is always hungry for a chance and often that sort of attitude creates a star striker.

He grabs a goal every 140 minutes or around every one and a half matches which would lead to 20 in a season. there might be some worries he can still do it at Championship level, but that is a risk we think West Brom should take.

He isn't on for being too involved in the dirtier side of the game, making just 1.3 tackles per game, but a striker isn't there to tackle, he's there to score goals and Jack Marriott does that in abundance.

He's won 33 fouls this year which could mean one of two things. either he doesn't get involved enough to be fouled, which contradicts his goal scoring tally, or he is strong enough and tough enough to ward off the challenges. Having seen him play first hand I can confirm the latter is true.

West Brom would be getting a bargain if they snapped up Marriott for somewhere around £5m, this boy brings goals and I suspect that to be the case at whatever level he plays at.

The main stumbling block will be the new Posh manager Steve Evans, a larger-than-most character who will doubtless be building up his price tag as we speak.
