Oxford United narrowly missed out on the League One Play-Offs by a measly four points last season, and will be looking to go one better next season.

Manager Michael Appleton has, however, lost a number of key players including midfielder Liam Sercombe to Bristol Rovers and defender Chey Dunkley to Wigan Athletic, both who'll be division rivals for the U's next term.

If the club want to push for the top-six again then they should try and make a swoop for free agent attacker Conor McAleny, who was released by Premier League outfit Everton at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old savoured a loan spell at the Kassam Stadium between January and May, firing on ten occasions in 18 outings to make him one of the most prolific strikers for minutes per goal ratios - netting every game and a half.

Although he did bag two hat-tricks during his time at Oxford, once in a 4-0 away victory over Chesterfield and his second came in a 5-1 win against Bury a few weeks later - so there is clearly an exciting prospect in McAleny.

Not only would he bring some positivity around the squad once again, but his track record is ideal for the league and Appleton should definitely get in contact to bring the centre-forward to the Kassam.

His versatility is vital as well.

McAleny is mostly a striker but is very capable of playing on the wing and that ability to play across the front line is more the reason why Oxford United should get his signature.

Oxford supporters, would you be ecstatic with the acquisition of McAleny? Could he fire you to a promotion charge next season? Tell us your thoughts in the comment section below!
