Portsmouth are back on the ascent after a few devastating years for the club.

Problems off the pitch filtered onto the pitch and Portsmouth were heading uncontrollably towards non-league before steadying the ship.

After a couple of years of consolidation, Portsmouth finally achieved promotion back to the third tier of English football and are looking upwards.

Pompey want to be competing at the top level again, like they were a decade ago.

After winning promotion to League One, Portsmouth will be looking at what summer business they can do.

This could include snapping up a top striker.

Their current options are decent at League One level but they do not have a 20-goal striker in their ranks.

Conor Chaplin and Kal Naismith will chip in with several strikes while other forwards Noel Hunt, Michael Smith and Curtis Main might get a few if they stick around.

However, Pompey should be looking at making a major striker signing and they should snap up Matt Godden.

Matt Godden was exceptionally good for Stevenage last season, scoring twenty goals in League Two as his side fell narrowly short of the play-offs.

Godden also notched six assists and averaged a goal every 163 minutes, which is an impressive ratio at this level.

The former Scunthorpe United academy product had to earn his way back into the Football League after a prolific spell in non-league and it looks like he is just getting better as he goes up another division.

The 25-year-old would be an ideal signing for Pompey and could fire them to yet another promotion.
