Storming to the League One title last season with an eye watering points haul, many had expected Sheffield United to use the 2017/18 season to consolidate their position in the second tier following an extended absence.

Now into the final third of the campaign however, it is clear and obvious that the Blades are not here to simply make up the numbers.

Firmly in the mix for a play-off spot, the prospect of a second consecutive promotion is well on the cards for this talented side, headed by the equally talented tactician, Chris Wilder.

The South Yorkshire side recruited well, complimenting their championship winning side with a number of promising stars, in a move that has paid real dividends for Wilder over the past few months.

Whatever division the club finds themselves in next season Wilder has a big summer ahead, and fans can expect a procession of departures as the manager looks to improve his squad.

This duo could be on their way out…

The controversial resigning of Evans seemed a good move given the player’s excellent form at Chesterfield, but the striker is simply not good enough for second tier football.

The Welshman missed a large swathe of his career due to well documented criminal proceedings against him, and this absence has certainly shown this term.

Just a handful appearances and a failure to find the back of the net, Evans has to go when the transfer window opens for business, but the player may struggle to find a club when he eventually leaves the Blades.

Evans could still do a job in the fourth tier, and that appears to be his most likely destination unless an unlikely move abroad were to materialise.

O’Connell has been in remarkable form for the Blades this term, and will surely court Premier League interest should the club fail to secure promotion in the coming months.

Joining from Brentford, O’Connell was instrumental in the title winning side of last season, and has emerged as the most consistent player in the squad at the higher level.

At the age of 23, the player is young and ready for a new challenge, with the top flight beckoning for the Liverpool-born youngster.

Blades fans will be gutted to lose the defender, but the club will struggle to resist bids from the higher level should they begin to materialise in the offseason.
