Garry Monk has done a fine job with Birmingham City under tough circumstances this season, with Blues just four points away from the top six.

That's after a very slow start too, with the West Midlands side only picking up their first win in late September.

When you consider the financial problems that the club had all summer, which prevented Monk from bringing in the players he wanted, it's a great achievement.

However, you have to wonder whether the lack of depth could be a problem for the side, particularly if they have genuine ambitions of challenging for a play-off sport.

With January set to be another tough window for Monk, he will instead rely on those on the fringes to step up when needed.

Here we look at TWO players who could still make a big impact for Blues this season...

The experienced midfielder has struggled with injuries this season but even so he was failing to get in the side.

However, at 31, Gardner should still have a lot to offer and he is a player that has regularly featured in the Premier League in the past.

That experience, as well as his drive, could help the team.

It's a tad unfair to say Vassell has been a fringe player as he has had awful luck with injuries in the past year, but he is closing in on a return.

He will have to be patient as Monk can't drop Jutkiewicz or Adams, who have been sensational this season.

But, Vassell will be a welcome addition for Monk in the New Year and his pace, movement and work-rate will give Blues another quality option up top.
