Bristol City has had a turbulent season so far with a number of highs and lows so far in the Sky Bet Championship this season.

After a season of differing fortunes last season, it was expected that Bristol City would be in a far stronger position to compete in the second tier this season.

The permanent signing of Lee Tomlin and the loan signing of Tammy Abraham appeared to be some astute business by Lee Johnson.

In an extremely competitive Championship season, the enduring marathon has led to a number of surprises, both for Bristol City and a number of their Championship rivals.

Bristol City's season has been one of mixed emotions with a number of stand-out moments for both positive and negative reasons.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at TWO of Bristol City's biggest highs and TWO of their biggest lows so far this season.....

High - The early season form

One of Bristol City's biggest highs this season was the early season form, which saq Lee Johnson's side sit second in the Championship table at one point.

Building on the momentum and success of the second half of last season, it appeared that the Robins could be one of the surprise packages this season as they looked to compete for a play-off position.

Bristol City managed to win three of their first five Championship games with victories over Wigan Athletic, Burton Albion and Aston Villa.

With the aid of Tammy Abraham's prolific goal-scoring form, it suggested that Bristol City could have a strong season if they could maintain their strong early season form.

High - The acquisition of Matty Taylor

One of the shocks of the January transfer window was Bristol City's acquisition of Matty Taylor from cross-City rivals Bristol Rovers.

The controversial move was the first move from Bristol Rovers to Bristol City since Trevor Morgan made the same move in 1987.

The acquisition was not only of Bristol City's nearest rival's star player but also one of the hottest prospects in the Football League, having scored 61 goals in 118 appearances for Bristol Rovers.

After scoring and providing an assist in Bristol City's action-packed 3-3 draw with Derby County, he has already begun to show his importance.

Having seen off competition from a number of Championship rivals, the acquisition of Matty Taylor has been one of Bristol City's biggest highs as he will be an important source of goals, not only for the rest of this season but also for seasons to come.

Low - The eight-match losing streak

After Bristol City's narrow defeat away to high-flying Huddersfield Town which a Frank Fielding goalkeeper error was the difference between the two sides, it didn't appear to a particularly bad result at the time.

However, the defeat to the West Yorkshire side appeared to drain the confidence and halt any momentum Bristol City side had.

The defeat was the first of eight as Bristol City suffered an eight-match losing streak, which is the longest consecutive losing streak of any Championship side this season.

The run included defeats to Brentford, Ipswich Town, Reading and Wolves which saw Lee Johnson's side fall down the table.

The losing streak that began at the defeat to Huddersfield saw Bristol City's fortunes change from a top half team to a surprise relegation contender.

Low - The defeat at home to Cardiff

One of the ominous defeats in the eight-match losing run was to Cardiff City at home, another narrow defeat saw Bristol City on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline.

Significantly, the defeat dragged Bristol City into the relegation dogfight which after such an excellent start to the season appeared to be inconceivable.

Since the defeat, Bristol City have only managed a single victory in six Championship games which was against bottom side Rotherham United.

Bristol City's continued downward spiral sees the side only one place and two points above Wigan Athletic, who are currently in the remaining relegation spot.

The defeat at home to Cardiff may be seen as one of the biggest lows of the season for Bristol City, as it could be seen as the turning point which saw Bristol City become the surprise candidate for relegation.
