The 14-goal Championship striker Leeds United and Reading should be battling to sign

Leeds United and Reading are in a very different position to 12 months ago, with their respective Sky Bet Championship seasons a huge disappointment.

This time last year Leeds were in contention for the top-six, whilst Reading were on their way to a play-off final, which eventually ended in a cruel defeat.

Both Leeds and Reading have failed to mount a similar kind of challenge this season, with a number of factors making the 2017/18 campaign a disappointing one.

A natural goalscorer has been something that has been missing this season at both Elland Road and the Madejski, which is something that both clubs will be looking to address in the summer.

Martyn Waghorn is one Championship striker who either club could turn to, after a hugely prolific campaign for Ipswich Town:

In his 42 appearances for Ipswich this season, Waghorn has 14 goals to his name and a further eight assists.

The 28-year-old averages 2.2 shots on goal every time he takes to the field, as well as making 1.4 key passes per game.

In possession Waghorn is also tidy, with an average pass success rate of 71.4%.

The Verdict

Last season, Leeds had Chris Wood, whilst Yann Kermorgant was prolific for Reading.

It is safe to say that both clubs have been missing that kind of figure to spearhead their attack this season, which is something Waghorn would resolve.

The striker’s stats, in an underperforming Ipswich side, are superb, with his contribution in the goalscoring department to be admired.

Leeds and Reading could do far worse than battling to lure the 28-year-old away from Portman Road.
