Marcelo Bielsa is a head-coach very much set in his ways and despite Leeds United missing out on promotion to the Premier League last season, not much has changed at Elland Road.

Leeds are playing the exact same brand of football in the early stage of this season, whilst Bielsa is continuing to work with a trimmed squad, with very few incomings over the course of the summer transfer window.

Taking a look on Leeds’ official website, they list only 22 senior players, with the likes of Leif Davis and Jamie Shackleton included in that.

It is one of the smallest squads in the Championship, and just like last season, there’s going to be a heavy reliance on youngsters stepping in as injuries build up.

For Leeds, last season’s injury list crippled them, with the Whites suffering from around 50 individual setbacks.

That might’ve forced Bielsa to reconsider the size of his squad, but it hasn’t, which was a topic of discussion when Football League World’s Chief Editor, Sam Rourke, caught up with David Prutton this week.

“I think so,” Prutton responded when quizzed on whether Leeds’ squad depth was still a concern.

“He’s (Bielsa) always been very vocal about being happy, as and when they’ve done business. He likes to get players in that he can work with over a long period of time because he’s got quite a deep and intricate way of training the players and making sure they’re all tooled up.”

Anyone that watched Leeds last season will have realised how injuries crippled them at key points of the season; Pontus Jansson missed the first-leg of the play-offs and Kemar Roofe the second. Ezgjan Alioski, Barry Douglas and Tyler Roberts were unable to finish the season due to their respective setbacks, leaving Bielsa with a bench full of academy players against Derby County.

And, for Prutton, he feels like Leeds need a little bit of luck on that front to be successful in the Championship.

He continued: “Certain teams have golden seasons. You look at the season Wolves went up, they had minimal injuries, playing the same team week in, week out, and maybe, just maybe, that’s what Leeds need.”

Nevertheless, this is a recurring topic when discussing Leeds, with injuries already hurting the Whites at the early stage of the 2019/20 campaign.

Douglas, Alioski and Liam Cooper are all doubtful for tonight’s clash with Brentford, whilst Roberts and Luke Ayling haven’t featured yet this season.

Prutton acknowledges that impact injuries are hard to avoid, but feels Bielsa might need to look at how he works his squad.

He stated: “Very rarely do you have a 100% fully fit squad, but I think Leeds maybe need to look at that side of it.

“Impact injuries, you’d do well to avoid, but how he (Bielsa) works them is maybe something he has to look at.”
