Chris Hughton defended his decision to make only one sub for Nottingham Forest in their defeat to Barnsley at the weekend.
Forest fell to their sixth defeat of the campaign at Oakwell, with goals from Callum Styles and Cauley Woodrow securing another win for Valerien Ismael’s side.
Styles fired in a rocket on 85 minutes, before Woodrow bundled home from close-range moments later to secure the three points for the hosts.
Barnsley made all five subs available to them in the second-half, freshening things up as they eventually went and found two late goals.
Forest, meanwhile, were to make only one sub throughout – Luke Freeman replacing Miguel Angel Guerrero on 73 minutes.
Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live after the game, Chris Hughton said: “It was because I was generally happy with the performance.
“You’ve never got complete control of a game, because you’re up against very good teams.
“But in terms of my games so far, we were as much in control against Barnsley as we have been in any other game.
“For me, there wasn’t the necessity. Anthony (Knockaert) looked like he could produce something, and I thought Joe (Lolley) did okay.
“Lyle (Taylor), along with Guerrero, hasn’t played too many 90 minutes. I thought he just got to the stage where, with his ball retention, he was just losing it a little bit.
“But overall, I thought he played well.”
Here, we take a look at Forest fans’ reactions to Hughton’s comments…
I feel utilising more subs MAY have helped however the banger of a first goal had nothing to do with fresh legs. I imagine conceding that goal having been the better team for so long was sickening, then suddenly confidence is drained and those legs feel ever more heavier!

You could argue that Barnsley freshening it up got them the 3points and the 2nd goal was poor poor defending

😂 we are in big trouble

That’s the reason we lost the game though, for me I’ve never seen the opposition this season tire before us, that bench yesterday was bizarre, 3 full backs and no mighten is very interesting. Him and Ameobi would have changed thst game our way

Goals change games George we didn’t take our chances, I agree with CH the players on the pitch were doing ok he brought Freeman on and I think that was fair

Oh I thought I saw Barnsley hit cross bar 3 times. Silly me

Pretty worrying. As we saw today, other more forward thinking teams are going to use the extra subs to their advantage. It is so typical of us to have such a massive squad and not be making the most of this new rule.

I think if we’d had more fresh legs in the last 15 we could’ve seen out for at least a point. We seemed to tire and lose concentration.
Ameobi could’ve given us something different to go for it at the end

Played well today and had some decent chances. Someone needs to ask Hughton why he’s so averse to using his subs. It was crying out for Ameobi towards the end to keep causing them problems going forward! #nffc
