The Republic of Ireland secured a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria last night in an international friendly last night with one player, in particular, producing a promising display for Mick McCarthy's side.

Starting his first game for his country, Josh Cullen excelled in the heart of midfield at the Aviva Stadium.

The Green Army began the clash slowly and were unable to create any clear cut chances in the first-half with Bulgaria going close on two occasions via strikes from Georgi Pashov and Kristian Dimitrov.

Following the break, the Republic of Ireland stepped up their performance levels and deservedly took the lead through Alan Browne.

However, Ivan Popov then equalised for Bulgaria from the penalty spot after John Egan brought down Bozhidar Kraev in the area.

Undeterred by this setback, McCarthy's side regained the lead through Kevin Long before James Collins sealed victory in the 86th minute.

After the clash, Cullen was awarded the Man of the Match award for his performance on his debut which in turn led to some Charlton fans to react in a positive manner on Twitter.

Cullen will now be hoping to inspire the Addicks to victory on Saturday when they host Birmingham City at The Valley.
