‘That’s the difference’, ‘Could be a gem’ – Many Charlton fans assess key figure after first win following Lee Bowyer’s exit

Charlton Athletic came back to beat Bristol Rovers 3-2 last night in the first game after Lee Bowyer’s resignation and many Addicks fans have been heaping praise on caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson.

Bowyer left the south London club to replace Aitor Karanka at Birmingham City and Jackson has stepped up to take interim charge while a permanent replacement is found.

Charlton made a concerning start to the post-Bowyer era going 2-0 down after 32 minutes to relegation-threatened Rovers as Luke Leahy scored from the penalty spot and then Ed Upson thrashed in a long-range effort.

But the Addicks didn’t let their heads drop and Andrew Shinnie grabbed one back with a classy half-volley a minute later before Jake Forster-Caskey whipped in a free-kick three minutes before the half.

The comeback was completed inside the last ten minutes when Conor Washington saw an effort rebound off the post back into his path and tapped the winner in.

It was a hugely impressive final 60 minutes of the game for the Addicks and one that will have done Jackson’s chances of getting the permanent job – should he want it – no damage.
