Rafa Benitez has played down speculation linking him with the vacant managerial role at Derby County, after appearing on BBC Five Live.

Derby are still on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Phillip Cocu over a week ago, following a hugely disappointing start to the season.

With Dubai-based royal Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan set to take over at Pride Park, the new owners will decide who takes charge of the club going forward.

Benitez is the name who has been on most fans' lips since Cocu's departure, with the Spaniard being installed as the new favourite to take over at Pride Park.

Appearing on Five Live, though, Benitez said: "No, not really. I think it's a big club and I have a lot of respect for them.

"But at the moment I am quite focused on trying to pass my quarantine here and enjoy it a little bit in England and then prepare for the next season.

"But you never know because football is changing and life is changing too much, but at the moment no."

Benitez is likely to be a very popular choice amongst fans, though, given that he guided Newcastle to promotion in 2016/17 and has also managed some of the biggest clubs in world football.
