Newcastle increased their ambition of finishing top of the pile after victory on the road to Huddersfield Town in Saturday's late kick-off as the Magpies extend their lead at the top.

Rafa Benitez and his side were going into the match on the back of a win against promotion rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday and the only change in the matchday squad was Dwight Gayle returning to the bench following an injury.

They got off to the perfect start as the referee awarded them a penalty in the 10th minute of play, and attacker Matt Ritchie converted from the spot.

Daryl Murphy helped Newcastle's cause when he nicked a second before the interval, tucking past the Huddersfield 'keeper from an acute angle to make the score line two-nil.

The hosts were offered a life line as Aaron Mooy bagged himself a goal from a spot-kick, but substitute Gayle ensured all three points after a late goal via a goalkeeping error.
