Aston Villa held Middlesbrough to a goalless draw at Villa Park to complete a 1-0 aggregate win and progress to the Championship play-off final, due to take place at Wembley against Fulham.

But there was a controversial moment right at the end of the game.

After Villa goalkeeper Sam Johnstone misjudged a long ball, he found himself out of his penalty area but he still stuck out a hand to stop Adama Traore's chipped shot, which looked like it was heading goalbound - although it is hard to tell if John Terry would have got back to stop it or not.

By the laws of the game, it was a certain red card but Mike Dean decided that he would only brandish a yellow card to the on-loan Man United stopper.

Boro fans took to Twitter to vent their anger at the situation with some tweets directed towards Johnstone and others towards Dean, while a few were more measured in their criticism, saying that it should have been a red but it was too little, too late in the tie anyway.

Here are a selection of the best tweets in response to that moment of madness from Johnstone.
