Sunderland manager Jack Ross has recently come out and insisted that the decision to leave Josh Maja out of the squad on Saturday afternoon was purely down to illness.

The 20-year old's future in the North East is in doubt, with reports recently claiming that the prolific forward has rejected a contract extension at the Stadium of Light, with his current deal expiring at the end of the campaign.

But as Sunderland prepared for their biggest game of the campaign at the weekend against automatic promotion rivals Luton Town, the decision to leave Maja out caused a huge amount of speculation.

Maja has been in incredible form for the Black Cats this season, scoring fifteen goals in twenty-nine games for Jack Ross' men, but after missing out on his side's 1-1 draw with Luton at the weekend, Sunderland fans must be fearing the worst.
