Wigan Athletic progressed in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night as they saw off Birmingham City 4-0 to set up a clash against Manchester United in the Quarter-final.

The Latics’ youth teams have been in very strong form this season and this continued on Wednesday night as Wigan put four goals past the Blues, with Kyle Joseph and Sean McGurk scoring either side of a Joe Gelhardt brace.

Wigan got off to a lightning start when Joseph netted inside fie minutes before Gelhardt added a second from the penalty spot with 13 minutes on the clock.

The striker added his second of the game just before half-time to put the game beyond any doubt before McGurk added the polish to an accomplished performance from Peter Murphy’s side at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground.

The pick of the goals was the one to make it 3-0 when Gelhardt broke through challenges to unleash an unstoppable strike from range high into the net.

Gelhardt has been very impressive for Paul Cook’s first-team too, bursting onto the Championship scene this season, scoring his first league goal for the club in their away clash against Hull City earlier in the season.

His form has done enough to earn him a new contract at the DW Stadium, warding off potential interest from top clubs.

After his heroics on Wednesday night, we take a look at how fans reacted to footage of his stunning second goal...
