Duncan Watmore finally put two years of injury hell behind him last night as his strike saw Sunderland progress to the semi-finals of the EFL Trophy.

A strong Black Cats side dispensed of the Manchester City U21 side by two goals to nil, earning them a serious stab at a Wembley trip. Whilst the tournament is lamented in some circles it has proven to be a great springboard for teams with Coventry City and Lincoln City winning it and mounting promotion challenges the following season.

Sunderland will not only be delighted for the boost it gives the squad, but also for the strike by 24-year-old Watmore. He's suffered two career-threatening injuries in as many seasons, but is now back in the starting XI and looking to be every inch the same player he was before his troubles started.

The winger earned England Under 21 honours before twice suffering cruciate knee ligament damage. In the time he's been fighting back, the Black Cats have sunk to the third tier.

With him back in the side and Wembley a real possibility, these fans have got plenty to say this morning on social media.
