Luton Town will be hoping that they can continue chipping away at the Championship play-off positions when the season resumes under Rob Edwards' stewardship.

The World Cup-enforced break means that the 39-year-old is having an extended period of time to settle at Kenilworth Road ahead of a busy second part of the campaign.

Succeeding Nathan Jones, after what was a successful second spell for the Welshman in Bedfordshire, the main objective for the former Forest Green Rovers boss will be continuity.

Sharing his thoughts on the appointment of Edwards after Jones' second stint as Luton boss, Pete O'Rourke told Football League World: "Yeah, he's got big boots to fill Rob Edwards, there is no doubts about that.

"Nathan Jones has worked miracles at Luton on the budget that he's worked with and I think getting them into the play-off semi-finals last year was one of the biggest achievements probably of all season really. I think Luton have been very lucky to have him that the job is done there.

"So he deserves his crack at the Premier League. But for Rob Edwards, it's a big opportunity for him after the Watford move didn't really work out. I think Nathan Jones leaves him with a good base to work with as well at Luton Town so if he can continue where Nathan Jones left off and get Luton in amongst the playoffs, where they're just on the fringes of right now. I think that will be a success for Luton.

"It will help sort of rebuild Rob Edwards after the unhappy experience at Watford but he's a top young manager. I'm sure the Luton fans will get to enjoy him even though they have the disappointment of losing someone like Nathan Jones."

The verdict

Edwards progressed excellently at Forest Green and desired his Championship move, and whilst his time at Watford did not work out, he has not lost any credit.

An exciting young manager, who saw success in League Two last time out with a squad with many similarities to the one he has inherited at Kenilworth Road, the immediate future is exciting.

Now preparing for a trip to Middlesbrough in two weeks, it will be interesting to see if there are any particularly noticeable changes in playing style.

Still, he has a while to continue settling in and implementing his ideas at Kenilworth Road ahead of an exciting new era.
