Speaking to Aston Villa’s official website, Steve Bruce has admitted the 2016/17 campaign has not been good enough from his side, with Villa destined for a mid-table finish.

Following relegation from the Premier League 12-months ago, many expected Villa to challenge for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship, but both Roberto Di Matteo and Bruce have failed to do so.

Villa have improved significantly under Bruce in recent months, moving from the brink of the relegation zone, to the top-half of the Championship table.

However, as Bruce looked ahead to next season, he admitted Villa had not been good enough in the Championship this term, he said: “Overall, as we look ahead to next season, we still have a lot of work to be done.

“We are nowhere near where we need to be. We should not be satisfied to be 12th and 15 points off sixth place in the division. That isn’t good enough.

“I will do my best to turn things around and get where we want to get to.

“Most of the supporters know it will take time. I have hopefully a hugely busy summer ahead.”

Bruce’s side will be looking to build on Sunday’s victory over Birmingham City between now and the end of the season, and continue to create some momentum ahead of a huge year for the club.

Villa travel to Blackburn Rovers this weekend, before welcoming, Premier League bound, Brighton and Hove Albion to Villa Park on the final day of the season.
