Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Carlos Carvalhal has defended Sheffield Wednesday’s lack of transfer activity this summer.

Wednesday have made just one signing so far this summer, with George Boyd arriving at Hillsborough on a free transfer from Premier League outfit, Burnley.

Despite Wednesday’s frustration at the lack of new faces ahead of the 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship campaign, Carvalhal has defended the club’s stance, highlighting Financial Fair Play as the reason the Owls have not thrown silly money around.

The Portuguese manager said: “We have not made too many signings so far because the market is very expensive and we have Financial Fair Play (FFP) to consider.

“There are teams who are doing crazy deals and don’t care about FFP.

“They are taking risks by breaking FFP to try and get promoted. But if they don’t get promoted, they will be with an embargo.

“That is not our way.”

Carvalhal is keen to add at least one new central defender to his squad this summer, as he looks to bolster his options following the departure of Jose Semedo and Vincent Sasso at the end of last season.

Reports revealed that Wednesday had a £3m bid rejected by Cardiff City for Sean Morrison, who has since agreed a new three-year deal in Wales, which has ended the Owls’ interest in the defender.

The Star have also linked the Owls with Newcastle United’s Grant Hanley and Middlesbrough’s Daniel Ayala earlier this summer, although that interest has come to nothing so far.
