Gillingham made their first significant move of the summer by enticing former Brentford stopper Jack Bonham to Priestfield on a two-year deal, as reported by the BBC.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan with fellow League One side Bristol Rovers, but found himself released by parent club Brentford at the end of the season. That prompted new manager Steve Evans to make him one of their first captures of what promises to be a busy summer in Kent.

Bonham made 40 appearances for the Gas last season, but has struggled to break through with Brentford after joining from Watford in 2013. He has previously enjoyed loan spells with Arlesey Town and Carlisle United, but thrived at the Memorial Ground.

Gillingham fans have been responding to the news, seemingly delighted that their side are finally making the sort of signings they expect to see from a promotion-chasing side.

Steve Evans might have a lot of work to do to convince their supporters he's the right man for the job, but if these fan comments are anything to go by he's made a very good start.
