Blackburn Rovers have confirmed defender Charlie Mulgrew has completed a season-long loan switch to fellow Championship side Wigan Athletic.
The Rovers captain saw his move to the DW Stadium confirmed on Friday morning after it was confirmed the paperwork was completed in time before Thursday’s 5pm transfer deadline.
Mulgrew arrived at Ewood Park from Celtic in 2016 and the Scotland international has gone on to make 108 appearances for the club, scoring an impressive 27 goals in the process.
The defender captained the side in Blackburn’s opening day defeat to newly promoted Charlton Athletic, but he has been in and out of the side in recent times and lost his place for the final six matches of last term.
Rovers confirmed Mulgrew’s departure via their Twitter account on Friday morning:
All the best, Charlie! ????

Plenty of Blackburn supporters responded to Mulgrew’s exit with many of them claiming it was the right decision, while others admitted their surprise at the move and wished Mulgrew well.
Here are some of the responses…

Thanks for your efforts in getting us promoted from league 1, thanks for the memorable free kicks, thanks for single handedly defeating Newcastle on several occasions, and thanks for being such a gent when my daughters and I came to see you that league 1 season, you were class!

I'm on the fence with this one. Became a liability and was exposed a lot. Its probably a good move but don't like the timing of it. All the best Charlie.

To get rid of him without loaning a replacement is a very bad idea
