Sheffield Wednesday chief executive Katrien Meire has left her role at the club after just 13 months, the club have recently confirmed.

The 34-year-old arrived at the Yorkshire club on New Year's Day in 2018, just a matter of days after leaving her post at Sky Bet League One side Charlton Athletic.

Initially, the appointment of Meire at Hillsborough raised several eyebrows - along with Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet, the Belgian was a massively unpopular figure at The Valley, and was subject to several protests from Addicks fans who were unhappy at the state of how the club was being ran.

Wednesday have recently put out a statement from Meire, which reads: "Since joining Sheffield Wednesday in January 2018, I felt a warm welcome from everyone at the club and the fans at games and around the city."

"I would like to wish the chairman, the staff and players at the club all the very best. With new manager Steve Bruce in charge and the fantastic support of our amazing fans, the club’s journey to the Premier League has never looked any better."

Meire played an integral role in the Owls academy during her time at Hillsborough, and was responsible for tying down a number of the Owls' younger players to new contracts.

Wednesday have made an impressive start to life under Steve Bruce, but the club are still a long way away from the play-offs in 16th position.
