Having been strongly linked with the vacant managerial role at Sheffield Wednesday, The Sheffield Star has confirmed that Steve McClaren is not a contender for the job.

The former England boss had been touted as Carlos Carvalhal replacement at Hillsborough following the sacking of the Portuguese boss, but the local publication has now ruled out chairman Dejphon Chansiri making a move for the title-winning boss, who picked up an Eredivisie winners medal with FC Twente.

The Star has reported that talks did in fact take place with Wednesday following McClaren’s from a backroom role at Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, with bookmakers slashing the odds on the Yorkshire-born man to take over at Hillsborough.

Lee Bullen will continue in his role as caretaker boss when the Owls take on Brentford at Griffin Park on Saturday, with the former Wednesday captain hoping to make it two wins from two after picking up three points against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.
