Former Sunderland boss Gustavo Poyet will not be returning to the club as their new manager.

The Uruguayan was the manager for a spell from October 2013 to March 2015, during which time they reached a League Cup final and stayed in the Premier League against all odds.

Therefore, there was excitement in some quarters when it was reported that Poyet could return to the Stadium of Light, but that now won't be happening.

That's after Keith Downie confirmed on Twitter this afternoon that the the 53-year-old isn't keen on working League One, although he stressed Poyet is still very fond of Sunderland after his time with the club.

It's fair to say those comments didn't go down well with some fans, particularly because Poyet is currently out of work, so it's not like he has better offers on the table right now.
