Swansea City have been a handed a significant boost after it emerged Wayne Routledge has signed fresh terms at the club ahead of next season.

The winger looked set to depart the Liberty Stadium this summer after his contract expired, but he has now been able to strike a deal with the Swans' hierarchy to extend his deal by a further year.

The fresh agreement will see Routledge take his Swansea stay to nine years, after he joined the club in 2011 following the club's promotion to the Premier League.

The 34-year-old has been an integral figure throughout that time, and he made a significant contribution under Graham Potter last season as his five goals in 26 appearances helped Swansea secure a top-half Championship finish.

Swansea confirmed the contract extension via their Twitter account on Thursday evening:

The news was warmly welcomed by Swansea fans, with many relieved to have sealed Routledge's services amid concerns the club may need to cut their wage bill this summer.

Many supporters expressed their delight at the winger's new deal, while they recognised the importance that Routledge's experience will have on the young side next season.
