The wait to see what happens in this country in terms of the football season at the highest levels continues, though some decisions are being made away from the top four divisions.

Lower-tier non-league football has been declared void - though there is naturally some resistance there - whilst in Belgium they've declared runaway leaders Club Brugge league champions and ended the season, promoting the two sides from the division below and relegating none.

Interestingly, such a model applied in this country would see Leeds and West Brom into the Premier League but for supporters' club chairman at the Baggies, John Homer, there's a very good argument as to why such a system wouldn't work.

Quoted by the Express & Star, he said:

"In Belgium there are only two divisions, there is no League One or League Two equivalent.

“I think it’s fair to declare the season over if all the teams have played the same number of games.

“But we aren’t in that position in this country.

“Voiding the season would be terrible for everybody concerned."

The Verdict

Both Albion and Leeds want to be in the Premier League next season and, on the basis of the standings and the way the campaign has unfolded, both deserve to be too.

How the relevant authorities go about finishing the season remains to be seen, though, with there no real suggestion as to how, or when, the global pandemic is going to come to an end.
