Chuks Aneke is a player attracting a lot of attention at the moment.

He’s currently a free agent and has his pick of a number of clubs as we enter a crucial stage of pre-season.

We turn to FLW writer Gary Hutchinson to get the low-down on the situation...

Who is Chuks Aneke?

“Aneke is a striker currently plying his trade with MK Dons.

“He’s also able to play in midfield, having made that his position during his younger years.

“He’s 25-years-old now and is currently a free agent, although he has a contract offer on the table from Paul Tisdale's side."

What’s his background?

“Aneke has had a good upbringing, he came through the ranks at Arsenal and in his younger days was likened to Yaya Toure by Arsene Wenger.

“He got a lot of loan experience whilst with the Gunners, playing for Stevenage, Preston and Crewe. He looked good at Crewe, they took him in twice and he bagged 20 times in 70 matches for them.

“When he left Arsenal he moved abroad, signing for Zulte Waregem in Belgium. He had two injury-hit seasons there before returning to these shores with MK Dons.

“He was part of the Dons side relegated from League One, but also a part of their promotion campaign.”

How did he do last season?

“MK Dons were promoted and he scored 19 times in 41 outings. He was used as a striker, but it took him a while to get going.

“He didn’t seem to settle in League Two and it was believed he might seek a transfer, but once he settled down, he looked a real handful.

“He was in and out of the side, as much a result of Paul Tisdale tinkering with the system as anything.”

What are his strengths?

“He’s a big, athletic player with a real physical presence. He’s good in the air as well as with the ball at his feet.

“There is evidence of that Arsenal upbringing too; he’s composed on the ball and he looks strong.

“He was probably too good for League Two last season, but that’s the level he found himself in. At times there are questions over his commitment, but he dispelled many of the MK Dons’ fans concerns with his goals.”

Who is interested?

According to Team Talk there are a host of clubs hunting the 25-year-old.

“In League One, Portsmouth were credited with interest, but they’ve possibly moved on from him now.

“In the Championship, Sheffield Wednesday, QPR, Hull, Wigan and Barnsley were all mentioned in the report.

“Given that he’s available on a free transfer, teams have little to lose by bringing him in.”

What do you think will happen?

“I can see him leaving MK Dons, that much I’m sure of. They’ve signed Joe Mason and Jordan Bowery, as well as retaining Kieran Agard and I just can’t see Aneke fitting into that quartet.

“In terms of a final destination, I quite like QPR as a fit for him. They’ve got some tricky players like Ebere Eze up top, but they need that physical presence that Aneke could offer.”
