Sunderland and Gillingham meet this evening alongside a whole host of League One action to sink your teeth into.

Jack Ross’ men are coming into this game on the back of a comeback draw with Accrington Stanley last Friday.

The Black Cats were 2-0 down before rallying to restore parity and earn a point in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.

The draw, however, made it three in a row for Sunderland, and seven stalemates in their last ten games, remaining unbeaten in that time.

Sunderland are six points off the automatic places and could move within three points of Barnsley in second if results go their way tonight.

Gillingham, meanwhile, are meandering in the lower reaches of the league and are three points ahead of the bottom four ahead of this evening’s trip to Wearside.

The Gills have had indifferent form, winning, losing and drawing two each of their last six matches and need the points to increase the gap between them and the sides below the dotted line.

Ahead of the match, Sky Sports divulged some early team news from both camps.

For Sunderland, Ross has no new injury worries heading into the home fixture with Gillingham, despite a few knocks being assessed after last Friday’s draw with Accrington Stanley.

Lee Cattermole and Chris Maguire are among those pushing for recalls, while Bryan Oviedo could return from a calf problem having returned to full training this week.

Duncan Watmore is unlikely to be involved following a long-term injury while Glenn Loovens and Donald Love are both still sidelined.

For the visitors, Josh Rees is in contention to feature tonight having missed the weekend’s win over Scunthorpe with a hamstring strain.

Ricky Holmes has a back problem and Alex Lacey an ankle injury which will see both miss out.

Captain Gabriel Zakuani will miss tonight and the rest of the season with ankle ligament damage.

The verdict

On paper, it looks like there is destined to be only one winner, but such is Sunderland’s form – any kind of result is possible.

Gillingham have more injury problems than their hosts, and that could be a telling sign to how this result will go.

But having won on the weekend with Sunderland failing to, again, the result could go either way.
