Talks progress between West Brom and PL club with loan swap deal on the cards

Progress has been made with talks between West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United over the possibility of a loan swap deal, according to reports.

According to the print edition of The Daily Mail, via the Sky Sports News Paper Talk page, West Brom and Newcastle are moving closer to an agreement which would see Salomon Rondon head to St James’ Park on loan, with Dwight Gayle coming the other way.

Newcastle have been long-term admirers of Rondon and want the physical centre-forward to bolster their attack.

The Magpies are also closing in on Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto, which could make Gayle surplus to requirements.

The former Crystal Palace forward only hit six goals last season but scored 23 Championship goals in the 2016/17 season to help Newcastle win promotion.

West Brom are hoping to snap up the 28-year-old with Rondon heading the other way.

Newcastle are reluctant to activate the Venezuela international’s release clause, reported to be £16.5m, as it would be a club record fee.

But a deal which sees the 28-year-old join Newcastle temporarily could be negotiated if Gayle is used as a makeweight.

The Verdict

This deal works for all parties and they need to get it over the line.

Newcastle are planning to get rid of Aleksandr Mitrovic and they want Rondon as a like-for-like strong centre-forward to replace him.

This is likely to push Gayle out of the door, especially if Muto joins to provide competition with Rondon and Ayoze Perez, and the diminutive striker would be an excellent capture for the Baggies, who would surely have one of the best strikers in the division.
