Middlesbrough midfielder Marten De Roon is edging close to a move to Serie A giants Lazio, according to Il Mattino (via Sport Witness).
The 26-year-old only moved to the Riverside Stadium last summer following a short spell with Atalanta, and was part of the Boro squad which failed to avoid the Premier League drop, finishing second bottom in the division and 12 points adrift of safety.
However, the Dutch international did show signs of promise with four goals in 33 league games for the North East giants, but it does appear that his one-year stay in English football may well be coming to an end this summer.
And that’s because recent reports suggest that Lazio are in advanced talks with De Roon over a return to Serie A.
The midfielder reportedly wants to go back to Italy following Boro’s relegation, and having helped Atalanta to a 13th place finish in the top-flight back in 2015/16 with 33 appearances, he has also performed well in the country.
However, this news will likely come as a blow to Middlesbrough fans given how well De Roon played for them last term, as the club look to bounce straight back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Yet, it looks like they may have to do that without one of their few shining lights from last term.
