The January transfer window is not far away and for Middlesbrough it could be a crucial time of the season.

Jonathan Woodgate's side are sitting in 20th place in the Championship, and while results have picked up recently, there's still plenty of work to do to move them up the table.

Injuries have played a huge part in Middlesbrough's struggles this term, but those frailties have only emphasised the need for attacking reinforcements, something which is thought to be a top priority in January.

According to reports from Football Insder, the Teessiders are plotting a move for Peterborough United star Marcus Maddison.

The 26-year-old has taken League One by storm for the Posh after scoring 10 goals and getting eight assists in 20 games so far this term.

A playmaker by trade, Maddison is out of contract at the end of the season and could be available if Middlesbrough meet a release clause in his contract which is thought to be £2.6million.

News of the interest was shared into a Middlesbrough supporters' group on Facebook and sparked quite a reaction among fans.

Here's what supporters had to say.

Stephen Poole: “Why not. Must be better than what we have now.”

Michael Haines: “Offer 1.5m. If they don’t accept open contract talks for the free transfer in the summer. Either way you win.”

How much attention have you paid to Middlesbrough this season? Let's find out!

Dave Chapman: “Can’t wait for the moaners to see this. They’ll think we should sign James Maddison, not Marcus!”

Eddy Hebron: “I’ve watched this lad throughout his career. Like all youngster he showed a lot of promise early on but hasn’t really kicked on. He’s having a decent season this season but ar 26 and a couple of million, I’d rather stick with Marcus Browne!”

Anthony Townsend: “Finally linked with someone who can make a difference. Talented lad this fella – goals and assists something we lack behind our strikers.”
