Given their recent troubles, it would be easy to write an article on all the negative publicity surrounding Bolton, but today we're going to be taking a trip down memory lane, or more specifically, back to the evening of Thursday 8th November 2007.

For the non-Bolton-supporting readers of this piece, it is worth explaining that this night was when one of Bolton's most famous matches, in which a struggling Wanderers side, who at the time were sitting second bottom of the Premier League, produced a stunning performance to draw 2-2 at the home of German giants Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup group stages.

The lowly Wanderers side pitted their wits against a Bayern Munich side made up of legendary German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, Marcell Jansen, Lucio, Daniel Van Buyten, Christian Lell, Franck Ribery, Andreas Ottl, Mark van Bommel, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lukas Podolski and, German goalscoring legend, Miroslav Klose.

But what became of the famous Wanderers side who denied the then Bundesliga leaders a victory late on at the Allianz Arena?

Goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi is still currently playing, with the Oman international having left Bolton in 2011 for Wigan Athletic, he then went on to play for Brighton and Hove Albion, Reading and Saudi Arabia based side Al-Hilal before returning to English football this season with West Brom.

Andrew O'Brien also left Wanderers in 2011, going onto to play for Leeds United and then onto Vancouver Whitecaps, for whom he appeared just 50 times before hanging up his boots in 2014.

Centre back Gerald Cid, enjoyed a short period of his career at Bolton, with the Frenchman only appearing seven times for the Trotters before moving back to France with Nice in 2008. He retired from playing in 2010.

The other centre back for Bolton that night was the Slovakian Lubomir Michalik, who like Cid, spent a short time at the Reebok Stadium before departing for Leeds United. After leaving Elland Road in 2011, Michalik went on to turn out for Carlisle United, Portsmouth, Kairat Almaty, DAC Dunajska Streda and SKF Sered. He is still said to be playing.

Playing at wing-back that night in Munich, was Ricardo Gardner, who opened the scoring in the game with his first goal in five years. Gardner went on to play over 300 league games for Wanderers before retiring in May 2014.

Midfielder Mikel Alonso endured a short loan spell with Bolton during the 2007/2008 season, in which he only made seven league appearances before spells at Tenerife, Charlton Athletic and Real Union, where he finished his career.

Probably the most well-known of the Bolton team that night was Kevin Nolan, who of course established himself as a Bolton Legend, making over 300 league appearances for Wanders before departing for Newcastle in 2009, after which he enjoyed spells at West Ham, Leyton Orient and Notts County as player-manager, for whom he was sacked in the summer of 2018. He is currently looking for his next managerial role.

Also in midfield that night was Danny Guthrie, who spent the 2007/2008 season on loan at Wanderers from Liverpool. Guthrie turned out for the Trotters on 25 occasions in the Premier League before going on to play for Newcastle, Reading, Fulham, Mitra Kukar and is currently plying his trade in League One for Walsall.

Midfielder Gavin McCann turned out for Wanderers in 75 league games before being forced to retire in 2011 due to a bad knee injury. He now coaches Bolton's under-18 side.

Another player in the team that night who enjoyed a short-lived spell at Bolton, was winger Daniel Braaten, who turned out for the Trotters on six occasions before departing for Toulouse. After his spell in France, Braaten went on to appear for FC Copenhagen, Valerenga, Brann and now plays for Norwegian side Stabaek.

Last but by no means least is another Bolton legend, Kevin Davies, who scored the dramatic 82nd-minute equaliser in Munich that night. Davies played for Wanderers over 400 times before departing for then League One side Preston North End, for whom he played with for two years before hanging up his boots after a playing career spanning over 20 years. He then went on to manage National League North club Southport before getting sacked in 2018.

With Bolton's financial troubles now seemingly under control, Wanderers fans will be hoping that they will one day be able to experience memories of this guile again one day.
