Swindon Town have confirmed the signing of striker Jermaine Hylton from non-league side Redditch United, BBC Sport confirm.

Swindon have signed Hylton on a free transfer

Swindon chairman Lee Power has confirmed that the 21-year-old, who was not under contract at Redditch, has signed on a free transfer.

"There were a number of clubs that were interested," Power told BBC Wiltshire.

"Birmingham and a number of other teams offered him a deal so we're pleased to get him."

However, the Gazette and Herald reported earlier this week that Redditch had lodged a complaint to the FA over Swindon's approach for Hylton, which they felt was illegal.

"Swindon have made an illegal approach for Jermaine and it's disrespectful to the club," Redditch chairman Chris Swan said.

"Swindon submitted a seven day approach for Jermaine on the morning of New Year's Day but their chairman has been quoted as speaking to him before the seven days are up. We've submitted a complaint to the FA and we'll see what happens."

Despite the controversy, Power has confirmed that the transfer has been completed and insists that Swindon's approach was lawful.

"It's difficult in non-league. Redditch decided not to have him on a contract so we put in a seven-day approach," said the Swindon chairman to BBC Sport.

"We offered them a pre-season game and for whatever reason they decided not to go for that.

"The lad has signed and now he's officially a Swindon Town player."

Hylton, who scored 45 goals in two seasons for Redditch, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Country Ground.

Current League One leaders Swindon aren't short of goal-scorers - with Andy Williams and Michael Smith having scored 27 goals between them this term - but Hylton's addition will add valuable squad depth to a side leading the chase for promotion.

Mark Cooper's side travel to the Ricoh Arena to take on Coventry City on Monday.
