Swindon Town are targeting a swoop for Motherwell's Northern Ireland international Trevor Carson, as reported by the Sun's Alan Nixon.

The Robins got their season off to a good start with a 2-0 win away at Scunthorpe United, but boss Richie Wellens is still keen to add to his squad before the transfer deadline. Carson, who missed most of last season with deep vein thrombosis, is thought to be open to a move to England.

He started his career with Sunderland, spending time on loan with Hull City, Lincoln City and Chesterfield amongst others. He later moved to Bury on a permanent deal where he became their number one stopper.

He's gone on to amass 321 senior appearances, with 45 of those coming in the SPFL with Motherwell. He's also been capped by his country, appearing four times since being called up in 2018.

35-year-old Luke McCormick started in goal for the Robins this season; he played second fiddle to Chilean custodian Lawrence Vigouroux, who left the County Ground at the end of last season.

The Verdict

Carson is a good keeper; I had the pleasure of watching him play during the early part of his career and he's a good shot-stopper who has gained command of his area as his experience has grown.

He's certainly the sort of player who could make a big impact to the back four of a League Two side.

He was unlucky at Motherwell last season and is now perhaps hoping to find a club he can play regular football for once more. He should displace McCormick if he makes the move to Wiltshire.

Whether a move to the basement division affects his international chances remains to be seen, but it's a good move in terms of domestic football for both parties.
