Swindon Town are closing in on Liverpool youngster Shamal George, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old is free to leave Anfield having been with the club since the age of 11. He's failed to break into the first team picture and his only Football League experience so far came during a short loan spell with Carlisle United.

During that spell manager Keith Curle was forced to defend him after an error-strewn outing handed them a defeat in a crucial League Two match.

He has had a loan spell with Tranmere Rovers, but only found himself in the side for EFL Trophy matches, conceding eight in three matches.

It's now believed he's closing in on a permanent switch to Richie Wellens ambitious Robins, with a meeting set up between him and goalkeeping coach Steve Mildenhall ahead of the new season.

George was once played up front as an emergency striker for Liverpool in a reserve match, and made headlines last season when he was attacked outside a Liverpool bar along with his brother.

The Verdict

That early setback with Carlisle will have dented the youngster's confidence, but it shouldn't be read into too much. Young players make errors, all players make errors, but as a 'keeper they can be costly.

He did keep a couple of clean sheets during his time there and will surely be hoping to get some senior matches under his belt.

Swindon let Lawrence Vigouroux go at the end of last season and certainly need cover in that area. Picking up young players from top academies is a great way to find new talent and this move could be a good one for the Robins in years to come.
