Swansea City are closing in on the signing of Basel's Aldo Kalulu, according to WalesOnline.

The club is in desperate need of a striker following Oli McBurnie's multi-million-pound move to Sheffield United, and the Frenchman has been targeted as one possible replacement.

It is reported that The Swans are interested in a season-long loan deal for the 23-year-old, which suggests there are still severe budget restrictions over manager Steve Cooper, despite money being raised through the sales of McBurnie and Dan James.

Kalulu is also able to play on either wing too and the fact he played just two games as a striker last season for Basel could hint that there are more additions on their way to South Wales.

At Swansea however he could be given more of a central role, with Nathan Dyer, Barrie McKay and Wayne Routledge all comfortable at right-wing, and the futures of Andre Ayew and Borja Baston are still uncertain despite the latter playing and scoring at the weekend.

The Verdict

Swansea are in need of reinforcements so it is good to finally see them kick into life in the transfer market, although they have made four signings this summer.

They lost significant pace with the departure of James so Kalulu will be a very useful addition in that regard, but the fact he went the whole of last season without scoring will be a concern.

The success of this transfer may depend on whether Swansea bring in a natural striker, as Kalulu has not shown in his career that he would be a reliable source of goals in the Championship, and therefore the club needs someone more prolific.
