Swansea goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has expressed that he has an ambition of playing for England in the future.

He's currently in his first full season as a second-tier goalkeeper and has hugely impressed so far for the Swans as he looks to help guide them to a top six finish in the current campaign.

Woodman is on loan from Newcastle and has made four cup appearances for the Magpies as he looks to make a name for himself in the English game.

His dad, Andy, was a goalkeeper for Crystal Palace and his godfather is England manager Gareth Southgate, meaning there has always been football throughout his family.

Woodman has expressed that he hopes to play for England one day, and that Southgate stays in touch with him through WhatsApp.

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Woodman said: "If you end up playing for England, it means you are a good player and you have done something well. Hopefully I can get there in the end."

"I have got a few England shirts he (Southgate) gave me for birthdays growing up - they are up in the house. But I haven't had a present for a few years. As you get older you get a WhatsApp instead."

The Verdict

Woodman has been excellent this season, and has really endorsed himself to Swansea City supporters after celebrating with them after the derby day victory over rivals Cardiff.

He has the potential to have a great future ahead of him, but he has to remain grounded and to keep working hard and ensure that the hype around him doesn't get to his head.

Woodman will hope that next season, Newcastle may give him a chance in the top-flight, but that obviously depends on other circumstances.
