What a season Bristol City are having.

The high-flying Robins are firm candidates for automatic promotion, and should they continue their current run until the end of the year, then they will push the likes of Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers till the very end.

Lee Johnson is performing miracles, and the work done by the former Barnsley boss must be applauded.

Relegation candidates in recent years, the transformation at Ashton Gate is unbelievable, and the club could realistically be a Premier League side next semester.

January will prove essential in the future of the club, and several new faces could be required to bolster the squad ahead of the second half of the season.

These five men should be on Johnson’s Christmas wishlist…

Liam Walsh

City have been linked with the Everton youngster in recent days, and this is a transfer Johnson should look to secure when the window opens.

Walsh recently had his loan spell at Birmingham City terminated after failing to impress Steve Cotterill following the sacking of Harry Redknapp, and returned to Goodison Park with a point to prove.

Unlikely to challenge for a starting spot under Sam Allardyce, Walsh’s time in Liverpool appears to have come to an end, and Johnson must make sure he is the man to offer a fresh start to the promising youngster.

Leonardo Ulloa

The 31-year-old Argentine has proven himself to be adept at this level, and could be on the move with chances at current club Leicester extremely limited.

Bristol City have had problems upfront this year, with summer signings Famara Diedhiou suffering from injuries and loanee Cauley Woodrow failing to find the net regularly, so another striker could be on the horizon.

Ulloa could be available on a loan deal to the end of the season, and the former Almeria and Brighton forward could hold the key to a surprise Robins promotion.

Erhun Oztumer

Another creative player could be on Johnson’s wishlist, with the young boss keen to add more goals to his already prolific side.

Oztumer has impressed in League One with Walsall for several years, and has continued his fine form from last season into the new year.

The classy 26-year-old is already approaching the ten goal mark at the halfway stage of the season, and could smash the twenty goal mark if he continues at his current pace.

The five-foot-four playmaker is good enough to step up to the higher level, and should be available for a relatively reasonable fee.

Oliver McBurnie

The Swansea youngster is raising eyebrows at The Liberty Stadium, and nine goals for the reserve side is causing scouts across the Football League to turn their attentions towards the talented forward.

Able to play out wide or behind a main striker, McBurnie is a creative player with an eye for goal, and Johnson would surely be keen to secure the services of such a talented player.

Whether struggling Swansea allow the player to leave South Wales remains to be seen given their current situation in the Premier League relegation zone, but the Robins should sound out Paul Clement to discover the young star’s availability.

Alex Woodyard

Central midfielder Woodyard has been sensational for Lincoln City since signing for the Imps in 2016 from Braintree Town, and was instrumental in their league and cup success last season.

Taking to life in League Two with ease, it is clear that the 24-year-old will play at a higher level, and Johnson should consider the player in the new year.

A real bulldog in the middle of the park, Woodyard hounds the opposition and allows opposing sides no time on the ball, as well as possessing a keen eye for a pass.

Such a battling and workmanlike mentality will seriously appeal to the Robins boss, who will seriously consider a gamble on the player in the new year.
