Swansea City are eyeing Wolves defender Ryan Bennett as a replacement for Joe Rodon with Tottenham closing in on the 22-year-old, according to The Athletic’s Tim Spiers.
Spurs have been pushing to sign Rodon over the last week or so but have until the deadline for domestic transfers at 5pm today to get a deal done.
Recent reports have indicated that the Premier League side are closing in on their man and it appears the Swans have a contingency plan in place.
According to Spiers, the Welsh club plan to sign Bennett from Wolves as a replacement for the centre-back should he join the north London side.
It is understood that the move likely to be a permanent deal.
The 30-year-old appears excess to requirement at the Midlands club and hasn’t seemed part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans for some time – with his last appearance for the senior side coming in January.
Bennett would add some experience to what is a fresh-faced Swansea defensive line, with more than 100 Championship appearances under his belt.
Do Cardiff City and Swansea City have these 10 things in common?
This looks like a really smart move from Swansea.
Losing Rodon is far from ideal but if a good offer comes in, keeping the 22-year-old when the pull of Premier League football is there would be very tough.
Cashing in and bringing in an experienced defender like Bennett looks like a fantastic bit of business.
The 30-year-old is used to playing in a back three and adds experience, something the Swans backline has lacked since Mike van der Hoorn’s exit.
